Focus on Things Within Your Control to Improve Life

Do you know that we are responsible for complicating our lives ourselves? Yes, this is true, and most of us aren’t aware of this. Are you utilizing your energy controlling things that are not in your control in the first place? Like other people’s actions, behavior, or plays. When we choose to focus our attention, time, and energy on areas or things that are beyond our control or try to alter them, we tend to make our lives more complicated and stressful. This means other people’s actions, behavior, words, play, ideas, feelings, and mistakes start controlling us. If you want your life to be better, less complicated, and together, then focus on things that you can control.

Identify things that you can control

You can control all those things that you have direct power over. These things are:

  • Thoughts and actions

  • Reactions to events

  • Choices and mistakes

  • Words and behavior

These things might seem to you small or irrelevant initially, but if you look into them deeply and practice your control, you will realize how they can create a huge difference in your life. And also, how they lead to your growth and development. Lack of control can lead to poor decision-making in important areas of life, complicating simple things, pushing you into making choices that do not align with your life goals, and several other concerns.

Thoughts and Actions

What we think and how we act play an important role in influencing the future course of events in our lives. Our thoughts define our actions. If we have a positive thought process and a growth mindset, we eventually take actions that take us forward in life. Despite all the obstacles, in one way or the other, you achieve what you desire if you have control over your thoughts and actions. On the contrary, if you waste time and energy thinking about what others feel about your actions or failures, you cannot grow. This is because you are too busy thinking and controlling things beyond the circle of control.

Reactions to Events

How can I control reactions to events? To practice control over your reaction to an event, it’s important to identify and name your emotion. Understand what you are truly feeling, take a pause, connect the dots, reframe the scenario, and respond constructively. Don’t jump to the conclusion immediately. Observe, think, regain control over yourself, seek guidance or support if necessary, and then react. Controlling your reaction will help you better cope with and accept things. Several events occur, some might even shatter you completely. Events cannot be altered or deleted, but your reaction to the event can be controlled if you allow yourself to.

Choice and Mistakes

Choices and mistakes are interrelated to each other. When the choice you make is bad or delivers you undesirable outcomes, the choice turns into a mistake. But the question here is, how to control choices? It’s understandable if you are thinking of how something like choice can be controlled. Controlling choices include gathering all the available information, analyzing other options, knowing the extremes, and then making a final choice. No matter what the consequence of your choice is, you must be accountable for it.

Words and Behavior

Words and behavior are among the most important things that you must not lose control over. Irrespective of the events and circumstances you are in, you must select your words wisely. Before you speak, pause and think if you are using the right words and do they fit into the situation you are in. When we lack control over our words and behavior, we become vulnerable to events and are directed by emotions and things beyond our control. Practice mindfulness, speak consciously, identify your triggers, and manage your emotions.
